One snub was enough. Another and it would have started to look spiteful from Thomas Tuchel, a coach who is far too wily not to realize that claiming the World Cup trophy is probably going to require help from the talented midfielder, although it is equally up to the player to adapt to the tactical structures and squad hierarchies required with England now that he is back in the manager's welcoming fold.
The manager seeks the player's competitive fire, his intensity, but it is a matter of channeling it constructively. Individual quality matters but the squad understand from past setbacks that there is consequences when stardom dominates. Still, a message has been sent.
Bellingham was given food for thought after not being selected of last monthâs squad. He watched England book their place at the upcoming World Cup in his absence. He saw Morgan Rogers perform brilliantly as a high-pressing No 10. He heard the coach mention loving the team's dynamism and principles. Inevitably, Bellingham has responded in champion style, scoring crucial goals for his club versus Barcelona and the Italian side. He had to be picked; a second snub would have made his squad place precarious.
The hope is that the manager will have a Bellingham focused on intimidating opponents rather than his own colleagues. Ultimately, in purely sporting terms, there is no advantage to picking a fight with a top talent in the world. The best outcome is that his period on the sidelines has made him realize that an international career is a precious, precarious thing. The coach, for his part, can now throw a protective shield around the 22-year-old after proving that he is willing to drop big names.
âThere is no problem regarding him, and no concern about his personality,â Tuchel said. âBellingham just has that aggression. It takes that kind of fire to achieve greatness that he reached. We all must help him and build an environment where he can channel his drive towards opponents and for the objectives we are striving for as a team.â
Bellingham dominated the spotlight at the manager's selection reveal for this monthâs dead-rubber qualifiers versus Serbia and Albania. Any other news? Well, how about Phil Foden? Here is a further gifted No 10 requiring support and direction. Foden has been absent for England since spring and has found it hard to hit the heights recently but Tuchel was impressed by the player after his display in Manchester Cityâs win against the German side recently.
The question, however, is how to use the attacking talents at Englandâs disposal. Morgan Rogers and Eze deserve their spots and there will be compelling reasons to select another youngster once he overcomes a persistent groin problem. Would taking five No 10s to the World Cup be too many? The previous manager failed to discover the right blend at Euro 2024. He made concessions by squeezing both stars into the starting lineup, cramping Harry Kaneâs style as a result.
It is hard to see the current manager repeating that if it disrupts the team harmony. There is room for one No 10, with fast wide players on the wings. Clear roles is beneficial. Bellingham is in as a central attacker. Bournemouthâs Alex Scott, selected for the first time, is a central midfielder and the recalled Adam Wharton will battle another player as a defensive midfielder. There will also be no wide role for the City star, who has to be through the middle. The coach wants him close to the striker. âIt is illogical to tell Foden: âYou are needed in the team but no spot exists in your preferred role, can you play the left side? Or the right wing?â he said. âPhil is to feature in the advanced midfield role, through the center. I've long had this fantasy about him for years. I think it matches his abilities best.â
Tuchel conceded there are occasions when Foden has not looked himself in an England shirt. âOne senses as if, âDoes he really enjoy it? And a player like him who has obvious passion for the game, then obviously something is not right, whether it's his role, the setup, I donât know.
âI think he is also so used to representing his club in a certain structure, with a defined role. I think he benefits greatly from clarity. What is my position? In which positions should I turn? Where am I supposed to push the tempo? Where do I have to defend?
Tuchel talked about one star bursting through for easy finishes and the other scoring goals from outside the box. He added he has a extended list of 60 players. Several players, Myles Lewis-Skelly, the goalkeeper and the midfielder have dropped out. Nico OâReilly is rewarded for his excellent performances for City at left-back. Intrigue abounds.
Leaving out of the striker means there is no like-for-like alternative for the captain in the selection. Interestingly, Tuchel suggested using the playmaker as a false 9 versus one opponent or Albania. Other options, the United forward, Bellingham and the winger are other options should Kane be absent. With qualification secured, this is an opportunity for a little experimentation.
At the same time, it is also a moment to get the understanding with his teammate flowing. It's surprising that one must look back to the latter setting up the captain to net in a friendly win versus Scotland in over a year ago to find the sole instance in many appearances for England when the duo linked up for a score. Tuchel will know that Kane and Bellingham only exchanged the ball a single time during the team's ties with Denmark and another at the Euros. The connection is missing.
âThis is where eventually it becomes the duty of the players,â Tuchel stated. He does not shy away to deliver home truths. There is still a feeling of Bellingham being on trial. He may not be guaranteed to begin versus Serbia and Albania. The manager wants Bellingham onside but he will be watching him carefully. Leave the ego outside. Doing so could turn a very strong squad into an superior one.
