Former Treasury Secretary Summers Steps Down from AI Company's Directors

Corporate Departure
The economist stated he would step back from public positions after Congressional panel released his repeated correspondence with Epstein

Former US treasury secretary Larry Summers is exiting the governing body at the ChatGPT creator, just several days after a series of emails between him and late convicted sex offender the disgraced billionaire became publicly available.

Summers commented in a release that he was "grateful for the privilege to have contributed, excited about the promise of the enterprise, and anticipate following their progress".

Summers, who previously headed the Ivy League institution, declared on earlier this week that he would be withdrawing from public roles due to his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein.

Email Communications

The newly public communications showed that Summers communicated with Jeffrey Epstein until the day before the financier's 2019 arrest for suspected human trafficking of underage individuals.

In a separate statement, the AI firm said it respected the economist's choice to step down.

"We acknowledge his many contributions and the perspective he offered to the governing body," the company commented.

Political Context

This announcement comes after the two houses of the US legislature agreed on this week to pass a bill that would mandate the US justice department to release its records on Epstein.

The legislation will afterward move to the administration of the White House for endorsement. The President has stated he expects to approve the legislation, after reversing his stance on the matter following pressure from his supporters.

Email Contents

A batch of Epstein-connected correspondence released by the legislative panel days ago mentioned multiple prominent individuals in the billionaire's past associates, without suggesting any illegal behavior by those people.

The messages indicated that the economist and the financier often met for meals, with the billionaire often attempting to introduce the official to prominent world leaders.

Personal Accountability

After the correspondence were made available with the general audience, Summers stated he took "full responsibility for my ill-advised decision to maintain communicating with the financier".

He added that he wanted "to restore faith and fix connections with the persons nearest to me".

Career Background

The professor served in leadership roles under party leaders; acting as treasury secretary under Bill Clinton, and as head of the National Economic Council under President Obama.

He led the university from the early 2000s and continues to be a professor there. When stating his step-down from public roles earlier on Monday, he said he would persist with his teaching commitments.

Further Repercussions

Following Summers' declaration on earlier this week, the Washington think tank, a progressive research organization in the capital where Summers was a senior fellow, announced that Summers was not affiliated with the institution.

Summers became part of the leadership of the technology firm, which develops the AI chatbot, in 2023 - following a failed attempt to replace its chief executive the company leader.
