Whenhe initial occasion Gorka Guruzeta competed in the UK, an teenage representing the youth squad against Borussia Mönchengladbach Under-23s at Wycombe’s stadium in fall 2015, he hit the target. During his subsequent match he took the field in British turf, against the English side weeks after, he netted. His third outing, against Manchester City not long later, indeed, he repeated the feat. As he revisited to the northwest to take on Manchester United at the sports complex in 2017, he did it once more. An excellent finish, as well. “In fact,” he remarks, “it ranks among my finest I’ve ever scored.” So Athletic did their duty: they took him off.
“I was furious,” the forward admits, then chuckling. “Probably there’s a recording. Our match against United and I performed well. I wasn’t allowed to feature the second half: I hadn’t yet signed deal, I was scoring goals, there were lots of rumours, you know how it is. I’m unsure regarding interest from Newcastle, but I came across reports about the Red Devils, the typical thing. It’s unclear if it was accurate, but had they contacted me, I would have wanted to stay at Bilbao. I’m fortunate to be here.”

At the training ground, the city, the day’s first practice is ready to commence; post-session, the short journey to Loiu airport and another trip to the UK, on this occasion to play Newcastle in the UCL on midweek. Just saying those two words lights him up. It has become a challenging campaign for the club, partially owing to the requirements of competing at this level. Beaten in added time in the local rivalry, they have managed just one win of their last eight matches and lost against Arsenal and the German side in the continental stage. Yet, look at the overall situation, the major occasions he’s experienced and those that lie ahead, and he feels a calm gratitude about him.
In the the period since he had come back to Athletic, Guruzeta has been a final four contender in Europe, stopped at the gates a domestic final by Manchester United, and has traveled on a traditional boat through the waterway accompanied by a huge crowd after winning the Copa del Rey, the first title in 40 years. He’s now Athletic’s top scorer in the UCL, where they are countercultural and making their first appearance in ten years. “This was beyond my dreams,” he says.
Guruzeta thought it challenging enough just to break into the senior squad and his assessment was correct. The son of the one-time rival player Xabi Guruzeta and a dedicated fan at the opposition side, the forward is from the Antiguoko academy, the San Sebastián club that nurtured Mikel Arteta, the former star and Andoni Iraola. He joined Athletic at 17 but after his top-level debut in the 2018 season, he experienced a torn cruciate, being released, a drop in category and a call back before he could earn his place, making his comeback to experience the peak of their lives.
“Entering the youth system thinking you won’t reach the top level but with every stage you advance through you’re remaining and you can observe the approach. You arrive and then … departure is necessary.” He had limited game time in a handful of matches between his bow and February 2019. “Subsequently I returned to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. Several appearances there and I suffered the ACL injury.
“A massive setback but In retrospect as a turning point because it made me change the outlook. Recovering from a long-term injury is difficult, but it’s beneficial. You develop habits previously lacking. Previously I was casual, but I did the sessions and then head home, as a youngster does. At the complex, all resources are available, so utilize it all. Training, prehab. Get in the gym. With hip imbalance, work on that. If your ankles are a 10, make it a 12 or a 14. All those ‘silly things’: perform them.
“Among professionals you’re going to crash into players who have crashed into players 200,000 times. They’re so strong. Seeing previous pictures: I had slender legs. Thus incidents occur. Present-day images and the improvement is clear. The setback taught me. Practice concludes, but additional work remains. Peers are prepared, really ready; you have to be too.”
Minutes are crucial. The striker moved emotionally in that year, aged 23, joining the second tier. During his Sabadell spell in the 20-21 campaign, he scored three times in numerous matches. With Amorebieta in the latter part of the season, the goals started to flow. “Many experience this: temporary moves, ended deals. With a turnaround, work, believe, and if one day they need someone for your role, they might come back for you. You have to be ready. When they decided to call again, an aspiration fulfilled. The trophy success, European football, and qualify for Europe’s top tier … pfff.”
Little surprise he states appreciate the experience. All the more so after the previous season which, at times, was focused on persistence. Previously the main threat with a high tally, last season he got seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
